After spending a few months off the parkrun Most Events Global league table because of a change in the entry criteria, this course put me back on and into 242nd in the world for #parkruntourism and kept me well on track for my quest for my 50 shirt in 50 courses.
It was another early morning start (aren’t they all in Australia?) which meant that I was actually up at about 4:30am and left the house at about 05:00am – before sunrise! Thankfully, we had a hire car for the day and it was only about 2-2.5 hours drive from Sydney mainly on motorways. As with most early morning road-trips, you did get to see some fantastic sunrises on the way up, including driving past a valley where the sun was breaking in the mountains and the valley was full of mist below us! It was the kind of view you would expect in rural Thailand or something, not off the side of the motorway!
The main reason we were in the area was because we had a boat booked to go out on Lake Macquarie for the day, which this course gave us great views of and really whet our appetite! Would recommend this to anyone else who is thinking of visiting the area and wants to take in a course while they are there 🙂
* NOTE: Since running this course it was closed down and reopened as Lakeview rather than Belmont, so links below have been updated to reflect this, however I will still refer to it as Belmont as that was its name at the time of running it.
The course its-self runs alongside the fantastic Lake Macquarie, with great views over the lake for both the first and last kilometre. It is an ‘out-and-back’ course with a lot of hills in both directions, this one is not for the light-hearted! The course description on their website claims “There is a medium gradient hill at roughly 1km into the run, for around 500m”, however I would dispute that and say that the gradient is much harder and for much longer! The bit about it being a kilometre into the course is about right though, so I won’t argue with that 🙂
