I was on holiday in Cairns this week, which thankfully allowed me to pick up another Australian course without too much early morning travelling. I’m starting to think my holidays will slightly revolve around areas that have parkrun because they are so few and far between for me in Sydney that it is impossible to keep any momentum going.
With this being in the tropical north of Australia it was always going to be a tough run full of extremes. After a full week of glorious sunshine but with the monsoon season overdue I was unsure of exactly what conditions I was going to be running in, but as I walked to the start it was clear it was going to be the latter. It was without a doubt the wettest event I have ever taken part in and the rain came down in buckets! Having said that, it was not cold either, so it was literally like going for a run in the worlds largest shower!
Unfortunately this event is my first time breaking my unofficial time target of never going above 30 minutes 😦 This was largely due to my not feeling well and having to make a slight detour approx halfway round, so my run was still well under the time and would have been quicker had it not been for that.
The course is a pretty simple and narrow 1 lap course that starts near the ‘Fun Ship’ play area at the north of the Cairns Esplanade. From the start you run approx 1.5km south on a path through the small fields before turning left at the tennis courts to join the wooden esplanade walkway. At this point to cross the entrance to a car park, so be careful of cars entering as they will still have right of way here. You then run back the same distance back up to the ‘Fun Ship’ before continuing on the path heading north for another 1 km. You then reach a turnaround point and run back towards the start finish, keeping right of the toilets as you near the end.
