Today will sadly be my last UK event for a while (and probably the end of my week on week streak too) because as of next week I am moving back to Australia again with work, but this time for a lot longer not just a short trip. I am hopeful that as events become more successful in Australia and the parkrun brand grows there will be more events but that may take some time so my run will be fewer and far between from now on. Doesn’t mean I’m going to give up, just mean it’ll take longer!
Anyway, back to today, I am here because I have the final race in my Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest Tri-Nations series tomorrow in Edinburgh and wanted to have one last training run on the way up there. Having already done Carlisle last time I was in the area, today brings the turn of Workington which is thankfully just over and equal distance from my friend’s house.
This is the first simple out-and-back course I have seen in the UK, which reminds me more of a couple of courses in Australia more than anything. There is not too much to describe about this course really as you start behind the Workington Leisure Centre, head across the edge of the field directly in front of you before joining a cycle path and running down it for 2.5km before turning immediately around on the spot and heading back exactly the way you just came from. The whole of the out section is gradually uphill and the whole of the back section is obviously downhill in the same gradient. You finish exactly where you started from again.
