As the football season has started for me now, I am finally getting round to doing all of the Sheffield courses that I had previously been saving, which means I don’t have to give up on my parkrun but I can also still make it in time to play football as well (with the best warm up in the entire team!)
This is without a doubt the biggest attendance I have been part of too as well, nearly 500 runners today! Even in massive organised running events I don’t think I have seen this many people set off for a run at once as most of them are done in waves, this was 500 people all at once! Having said that though, it was odd how small a group of 500 people feels when you are actually running though, it was nowhere near as intimidating as I thought it might have been. Yet another wonder as to how parkrun works miracles sometimes!
Amazingly I managed to shave a massive 42 seconds off my previous PB this morning too! I finally got below 25 minutes but don’t think I’ll be getting near this time again anytime soon!
As I seem to have said in a few other course descriptions, this one starts in a large crowd in front of the children’s play area in the park, and with the park on your left you head out to do a quick small loop to the bottom entrance of the park to then come back past the play area in the other direction and start the first of two laps. By the time you come back round to the play area, the crowds have thinned out quite a bit, which is good because some parts of this course are quite narrow. Just after the play area, you run round the edge of the main park field before nipping up towards the duck pond on one of the afore-mentioned narrow paths – be very careful here as an ill-timed overtake could lead to either you or another park user in the water! After the pond, you carry on weaving your way through the wooded park section following the path until you pop up through a gate and leave the park to run down the pavement on the outside of the park towards the start line. When you turn back into the park, you do the small loop you did to start again before setting off on a second identical lap. The finish is in the same spot as you started.
