This weekend I am ‘Up North’ visiting some friends and getting ready to take on the Total Warrior race tomorrow, and although events are fewer and far between up here (compared to Sheffield) I was very pleased to find out that there was one just up the road from my friend’s house in Carlisle to allow me to use it as a warm up for the race tomorrow.
I think weekends away like this test what kind of parkrun tourist you are and I proved to myself today that I was definitely in this to complete my challenge and not give up too lightly!
As usual in the run briefing they asked if there were any tourists and I was quite confident I would be the furthest travelled, but I was amazed to find out that there were a couple of guys there from London who had stopped in to do the parkrun on their quest to walk the entirety of Hadrian’s Wall! Also there was a bride and bridesmaids all dressed up to do the run as part of a Hen Party celebration, it really was all going on today.
But that wasn’t it, a couple of days before the event it was announced on Facebook that there would be ‘parkrun royalty’ attending the event and a lot of people were trying to guess who it was going to be, but it turned out to be none other than Mr PSH himself! It was great to see and meet the person who started this whole thing and I’m sure even he never originally envisaged quite what it has become so it was great to see how passionate he still was about the concept and that he still travelled around to take part in the different events.
I mentioned before that I would struggle to explain the course when down at the Isle of Wight, but that course was child’s play compared to this one. I don’t envy the event team for having to explain this one to people who have never run the course before, I am just glad that I am not anywhere near first finisher and having to lead the way!
You start just in front of Morton Manor and head through the gates into Chances Park. As soon as you enter the park, you turn right and follow the path until you reach a small roundabout which you run right around and then you nip towards the left and follow the path for a short while before darting out into the field as marked by cones out on the course. From here you zig-zag through the trees towards the bottom end of the park before rejoining the path back up towards the roundabout from a different direction. This time when reaching the roundabout you turn straight back on yourself onto the next path along and head out towards the edge of the park again before turning left and running back up towards the Manor house. You follow this again for 2 more laps before heading back out of the park towards the Manor house to the finish line.
