So, 5 months after first hearing about and signing up for parkrun, I was finally persuaded to dust off my running shoes, print off my barcode and to take part in my first event this weekend.
Hampered by a problem breathing and trouble with my chest due to the long flight from the UK, I did not set out in the best condition, but thoroughly enjoyed the race and can honestly say that parkrun gave me more than just a run. Somehow, I don’t think this will be my last parkrun…
The course its-self takes place in the fantastic Sydney Park in St Peters just outside of the Sydney city centre. It is a 1 lap course that starts on the grass near the train station and heads round the edge of the park on a flat surface until about halfway where round you are faced with a huge hill! However, once you have scaled the hill, the views across the city are fantastic, so it’s well worth it! Also, the top of the hill seems to be a photographers favourite place to be because looking at the photos on their Facebook page (link below) they are all taken there! After the hill, you come back down the other side to the run around the sports green which was full of children playing all manner of sports, from rugby to Aussie Rules! One loop of the sports green then you head back the way you came and just before approaching the hill again you change direction to run around the lake in the middle of the park and then another long flat course until a sprint finish!
